曹公与袁绍相距，遣人招张绣。绣欲归绍，贾诩劝绣归曹公。绣曰：“绍强，又曹公与吾有雠，不可。”诩曰：“此乃所以宜从之也。夫有霸王之志者，固将释大怨，明德于四海也。”绣从之，归曹公。曹公见之喜，执诩手曰：“使我信重于天下者，君也。”
